Identity · The Original Decision
I keep thinking about the conclusions we reach about ourselves.
I work with men on the Original Decision: an early conclusion about their own acceptability, made with incomplete information and treated as fact ever since.
What I mean by the Original DecisionThe installation moment
I start with the point where that conclusion took hold.
The installation moment is when the Original Decision formed. I look at its origin and how it still activates in ordinary situations. We name what is happening as it happens.
A sentence I come back to
The decision was constructed, not discovered.
I know what it is like to be thinking about how I appear while a conversation is still happening. That is part of why this work interests me.
The loop and the protection
I follow what happens when someone feels exposed.
The protection brings brief relief, which helps the Original Decision feel true again. Pick a protective behaviour and follow one imagined conversation around the loop.
An illustration of the mechanism
Behavioral interruption
The prediction goes on paper before the action.
I look for the gap between what the Original Decision predicts and what happens. In a real situation, the action takes place while the decision is still active.

Write the prediction
“If I give a short answer, they will think I have no idea what I am doing.”
- 02
Take the action
I answer the question in one sentence and let the pause happen.
- 03
Record the outcome
They ask a follow-up question. The conversation continues.
The prediction is written. Next comes the action.
The track record
Each time, there is something to put beside the prediction.
The track record is the accumulated real-world evidence the Original Decision cannot explain away. I want a record of what happened, including the uncomfortable parts.
The first entry · illustration
Follow the interruption above to see how a prediction, an action and an outcome become one entry.

- Outcome
In the work, this entry comes from something that actually happened.
The identity rebuild
I want the description to hold up on a difficult day.
The identity rebuild is a self-description constructed from repeated facts. The loop can still activate. What changes is the ability to feel it happen and choose differently, with a track record to point to.
